Old School Rap Song of the Week! (Part 6)

Yoyoyo Old School Heads,

Here we go with this week’s entry. This is from one of the favorite Emcee / DJ duos of the 80s. It’s not everyone’s favorite group, but they are credited with being extremely influential. “The God Emcee” Rakim and his DJ Eric B! Rakim is constantly listed in the top 5 all-time for lyricists. Enjoy!

Sev was born in the heart of the 80s. Careless Whisper was number 1 on Billboard and Marty Mcfly and Doc Brown were gearing up to go back in time. I guess not much has happened since then.

  1. I just love the title of this song. I think I’ll steal it for work, and tell my colleagues in moments of stress, “Don’t sweat the technique.”

I love the sax in this song. I always love when woodwind, brass, and classical stringed instruments are incorporated in mainstream songs where you don’t expect them.

  2. I agree. I love old jazz and soul stuff in old school rap. The Sax and Stand-up Bass really stand out to me in this one.

It’s definitely a tricky engineering process to match the sound with the rapper. It’s why guys like Tupac never really resonated with me. He sounds too generic and I can’t relate to what he’s saying. You need a killer beat to go with a good voice. He never really had either in my estimation.
